COVID-19 news from Catalina Channel Swimming Federation

June 5, 2020 - COVID-19 Announcement - COVID-19 Update: Catalina Channel 2020 Swimming Season Cancelled

The Board of Directors of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation has decided it is necessary to cancel the 2020 Catalina Channel swimming season.

The safety and well-being of all swimmers, support crews, boat crews, and observers is the first priority of the CCSF. We are faced with a global health crisis with unknown, long-term consequences. We conducted a careful review and concluded it will not be possible to operate Catalina Channel crossings this season in a manner consistent with our commitment to safety.

This is a decision we never expected to confront, but must make now, to allow swimmers to plan accordingly.

The CCSF Board members are ocean swimmers. We are acutely mindful of the discipline, training, and dedication that athletes invest in preparing for these epic swims.

The CCSF will contact swimmers whose applications have already been approved to explain the procedures to postpone or cancel altogether.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have worked to respond to this crisis. We will prevail together.

The Board of Directors will continue to monitor the situation and looks forward to resuming Catalina Channel swims for the 2021 season.

CCSF COVID-19 Update: 29 April 2020 - The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic creates uncertainty for Catalina Channel swimming. The State of California’s stay-home order continues and prohibits nonessential travel.

Beaches and pools in Los Angeles County remain closed.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health order dated 10 April 2020 remains in effect until at least 15 May 2020. The order may be extended by subsequent directives.

The CCSF has not yet determined that it is necessary to cancel swims scheduled for June onward, although cancellations may become necessary.

If you choose to postpone or cancel a swim application, please see the instructions in the announcement dated 9 April 2020.

It is the responsibility of the swimmer to coordinate postponements or cancellations with their escort pilots, support crews, and the CCSF.

Thank you for your continuing patience and understanding as we all work to stay safe in these challenging times. We will provide updated information as it becomes available.

Stay safe!
