The English Channel - Het Kanaal

Jessi Harewicz Exploring the World's Oceans

Now I have to swim the English Channel

The world is covered by more ocean than land and there is an uncharted playground of water in British Columbia. So why not try something that is done less? You might discover more.

I was a synchronised swimmer as a teen, but I quit due to a combination of the teasing and my lack of success.

I am still a beginner in adventure swimming, but I can’t do much else right now. A couple of years ago I broke up with a long-time boyfriend and it led me to start training for a triathlon. I got back into the pool for the first time in 12 years. I did the Swim Trek boot camp and I failed so badly. I panicked, was violently sick and almost got hypothermia (in a wet suit!). But I only learned this by TRYING. Three weeks later I was swimming 10 hours down Indian Arm.

Just Add Water: Healing waters for marathon swimmer Robin Rose

In the wee hours of the morning, Robin Rose bares her skin to wind and water and plunges into long hours of salt-water swimming. She is part of a tightly knit community of ultra-distance ocean swimmers. They swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco as a training workout for greater spans like the Santa Barbara Channel, Molokai to Oahu and, of course, the English Channel.

Swimming ultramarathons in just a swim suit and cap, at the mercy of cold and currents, is part of their culture. What looks to most like a tortuous feat of physicality is to these swimmers a sanctuary of self-growth and healing.

Howard James swam the English Channel… at night

Fewer people have swum the English Channel than have climbed Mount Everest. In 2016, Howard James completed the swim not once but twice, and both times in nearly freezing water.

At 1am he stepped into the water and began his long swim from England to France, but it was just another step in a longer and more painful journey for James and his wife Esmari: in 2015 they lost their baby daughter, and part of the reason for James's two records was to raise funds for the charity they set up in memory of their daughter, The Alexa Trust.

Cloe McCardle swims the EC 21 times in memory of Des Renford

#21 all done and dusted in 10hrs29min. My #21 is also my 8th english channel solo this season and the new record for EC swims in one season! That's my EC season complete! Sorry for the delay in updating- after #21 Paul and I had a quick dinner, packed our bags, had a quick nap and then raced to the airport. We have just landed in San Francisco! I had the most AMAZING FINISH for the 21st swim! Monsieur Bouloy (manager of La Sirene - restaurant at the bottom of Cape Griz Net) met me on the beach with CHAMPAGNE!

Kennebunk’s Susan Knight swims her way into the record books in the English Channel.

Long-distance, open-water swimming is a solitary sport — hour after hour, mile after mile of lonely paddling in vast waters. It attracts people possessed of quiet grit, not to mention muscled backs and arms. As Susan Knight nears Pine Point Beach in Scarborough, she’s just finished a 3-mile swim. Still in the water, she moves easily through the sluggish surf, stepping over gentle rollers, her skin glistening and freckled in the morning sun.

Cloe McCardel on verge of Channel swim history

From a near-death experience suffering heat stroke in the burning Caribbean sun to hypothermia after being pulled out of freezing Atlantic waters, Chloe McCardel has suffered for her sport.

And that's before mentioning the savage box jellyfish stings the open-water marathon swimmer endured on a failed attempt at navigating the waters between the US and Cuba.
